Welcome to the new version of Miami-Dade County's website. We'd love your feedback. While we're at work, you may be directed to miamidade.gov, which is still your primary source for information.

Request Dog Tag Transfer

You can transfer the ownership of a dog from one person to another at the Animal Services Pet Adoption and Protection Center. A completed Transfer of Ownership form is required if a dog is being transferred to another county in Florida. As a result, your pet's Miami-Dade account will be closed.

Dog Tags

  • The dog's old tag number will be transferred and valid until its expiration date. A new tag will be required only if the existing tag has expired.
  • If the new owner decides to purchase a new tag prior to the old tag's expiration, the fee will not be prorated. Full price must be paid.

  • Eligibility & Requirements

To complete the dog ownership transfer, the following are required:

    • Both new and old owners must appear at the Animal Services Pet Adoption and Protection Center.
    • A notarized letter from the former owner showing complete delegation to the new owner and authorizing the transfer of the current license tag and microchip number. If a notarized letter is not presented, both parties must present a valid state picture ID and proof of current address for the new owner of the dog.
